What is mattwood.fyi?

A live, structured feed of riffs and links from Matt Wood, Chief AI & Technology Officer at AWS — readable by people and queryable by agents as a typed knowledge graph.

Is there an API and is it free?

Yes. A public, read-only query API is available with no authentication and no API keys. See https://mattwood.fyi/openapi.json and https://mattwood.fyi/docs.

How should an AI agent use this site?

Fetch https://mattwood.fyi/feed.json for the full structured feed, or query the API for keyword/semantic search and the connection graph. See https://mattwood.fyi/agents/ for when-to-use guidance.

The Zero-Cost Fallacy: Open Source in the Agentic Era (Thoughtworks)

Connections

Challenges

Together AI: Research-Driven Inference and Training Platform The 'zero-cost fallacy' critique of open-source agentic tooling implies hidden costs that pressure inference providers monetizing ostensibly free open models.
How Frontier Teams Are Reinventing AI-Native Development Thoughtworks' warning that zero-cost code generation is overwhelming open-source maintainers complicates the optimistic productivity-multiplier narrative from frontier AI-native teams.

Supported by

Write.md - Customizable Markdown Editor for macOS Write.md as free open-source software with local storage exemplifies the sustainable open-source model discussed in 'Zero-Cost Fallacy' — it avoids the hidden costs (accounts, cloud dependency) that the article critiques in agentic-era open source
Open Athena Thoughtworks' analysis of open-source costs in the agentic era is directly relevant to Open Athena's nonprofit model — the 'zero-cost fallacy' argument highlights exactly why Open Athena must provide compute and engineering talent rather than just code
Introducing Muse Glimmer: An Open Agentic Model That Runs on Your Device Muse Glimmer as an open-source model running locally addresses the cost and control concerns raised about open source in agentic era — it provides a viable self-hosted agentic option
Forking dotenvy into dotenv-ng dotenv-ng's fork story illustrates a core open source sustainability problem: when maintainers are unresponsive, downstream users bear security/correctness risks — a real cost the 'zero-cost fallacy' article addresses directly
Herdr is joining Y Combinator. The runtime stays open. Herdr's open-source runtime joining YC exemplifies the tension Thoughtworks identifies between open-source sustainability and commercial viability in the agentic era
Bonsai Bonsai exemplifies the open-source library ecosystem that agentic-era development depends on; the Thoughtworks piece argues open source has hidden costs in agentic contexts — Bonsai's specialized OCaml niche illustrates how such dependencies introduce unique maintenance and expertise burdens.
Marin Marin's fully open collaborative model directly exemplifies the thesis in 'The Zero-Cost Fallacy' about open source in the agentic era — demonstrating the real costs (coordination, infrastructure) even in genuinely open foundation model development

The virtuous loop of Open Agentic Development Both address the tension between agentic development speed and the sustainability of open-source ecosystems that AI tooling depends on.
LiquidAI/LFM2.5-2.6B · Hugging Face LFM2.5-2.6B as an open-weights model on Hugging Face is directly relevant to the discussion of open source economics in the agentic era — small open models like this are the assets whose true cost of deployment the article interrogates
Open Athena Open Athena's open-source positioning directly engages the tension Thoughtworks raises about open source viability and hidden costs in the agentic AI era.
How I Over-Engineered My Book Both examine hidden costs of technical decisions that initially appear straightforward - over-engineering a book parallels Thoughtworks' analysis of open source having non-zero true costs in the agentic era
Omarchy: Modern Linux Distribution Omarchy as an open-source distribution illustrates the real costs (curation, maintenance, opinionation) behind 'free' open source, directly relevant to the zero-cost fallacy argument

Challenged by

Palomar: Registry of Lean Verified Mathematics Palomar's preprint-server model for verified mathematics challenges the 'zero-cost fallacy' argument by demonstrating open, community infrastructure that has genuine validation overhead and quality guarantees beyond typical open source repositories.
